Sulfuric acid mist service should not be treated as a generic demister application. Acid concentration, temperature, water content, SO3 mist size and gas composition control both material choice and separator type.

Distinguish entrained acid from newly formed aerosol

Coarse droplets mechanically carried from an absorber are different from fine aerosol formed when SO3 and water vapor combine as gas cools. Ordinary knitted mesh is mainly an impaction and interception device; a stable sub-micron aerosol may require diffusion-based fiber media or another specialist control system.

The plant type matters. Feedstock, absorber conditions, acid strength and oleum production change mist quantity and particle distribution. Do not use a droplet range from one acid plant as a default for another.

The key engineering issue

Standard knitted wire mesh is effective for many entrained liquid droplets, but sulfuric acid mist can include very fine aerosols. Sub-micron mist often requires fiber-bed mist eliminators or other high-efficiency designs rather than ordinary mesh alone.

Material selection is also concentration dependent. Some stainless steels perform acceptably in certain acid ranges and poorly in others. PTFE, glass fiber, special alloys or engineered fiber-bed media may be required depending on duty.

Scope note: Fiber-bed candle filters are a separate equipment class and are not currently within Meshium’s supply scope. If the available duty data indicate that specialist fiber-bed evaluation may be appropriate, we will flag that selection boundary during our preliminary review rather than recommend knitted mesh beyond its suitable operating range. Final selection and performance guarantees should be provided by a qualified fiber-bed specialist.

A quantitative example with a narrow scope

U.S. EPA AP-42 Section 8.10 reports historical source data in which 85–95% by mass of mist from the referenced oleum plants was below 2 µm, compared with about 30% by mass for the referenced 98% acid plants. This is useful evidence that acid strength and process type can materially change particle distribution. It is not a universal design distribution and must not be reused as project inlet data.

Questions before selection

Ask for acid concentration, gas temperature, dew point behavior, SO3 content, mist loading, target emission limit, pressure drop allowance, existing equipment type and corrosion history.

Also identify sulfur feedstock and process type, oleum strength where applicable, absorber outlet conditions, water-vapor source, minimum and maximum gas rate, measured particle-size or test method, current control device, drainage route and normal versus upset operation. For a retrofit, include element arrangement, sealing, corrosion map and pressure-drop trend.

If the buyer asks for “316L sulfuric acid demister” without these details, the responsible answer is to pause and review the chemistry. A fast quote can be technically wrong.

Material review is a complete-system task

Check media, cages or grids, tie wires, gaskets, supports and vessel contact points together. Acid concentration at a condensing surface or within a draining element can differ from a bulk sample. Temperature excursions, water ingress, oxidants, deposits and cleaning chemicals need separate review.

Naming PTFE or a nickel alloy does not establish unlimited compatibility. For polymers, freeze the raw material producer, named commercial grade, temperature and mechanical limits. For metals, freeze alloy and product form plus any project fabrication or material-evidence requirements.

Procurement and compliance view

For environmental or stack-related service, the supplier should state the assumed droplet size or mist class behind any efficiency claim. Generic “99% removal” language is not enough for sulfuric acid mist.

State the required documentation in the RFQ and PI. The quoted baseline scope may include the specified material or batch traceability record, eliminator-media type, pressure-drop basis, installation orientation and cleaning or replacement guidance where those items are expressly listed. EN 10204 Type 3.1 or Type 3.2 documentation, additional testing and third-party inspection remain optional and separately quoted, and must be requested before the applicable material procurement, production or inspection-booking stage.

If the requirement is an emission or outlet concentration, define the test method, sampling location, operating condition, averaging period, inlet loading assumptions and responsibility for the surrounding system. Where specialist fiber-bed equipment is indicated, refer the duty rather than offering knitted mesh as an “equivalent.”

Use the wire-mesh mechanism guide to understand the droplet-size boundary and the co-knit guide for composite mesh that remains distinct from a fiber bed.

Authoritative evidence and date boundary

The U.S. EPA’s AP-42 Section 8.10 links acid-mist size and quantity to feedstock, acid strength and absorber conditions, and identifies fiber mist eliminators as a separate control class. It is a 1995 emissions reference built partly on older plant data, so it should frame the questions and device boundary—not replace current plant measurements, permit requirements or specialist design.

Frequently asked questions

Can standard stainless mesh handle sulfuric acid mist?

Often no. Acid concentration and temperature control material choice, and sub-micron SO3 mist may need fiber-bed designs rather than ordinary mesh. Chemistry review comes first.

What data is needed to quote an acid mist eliminator?

Acid concentration, gas temperature, SO3/mist loading, target emission level, pressure drop allowance and existing equipment details. Without these, any quote is a guess.
