Offshore separators often combine compact vessel geometry, high gas density, chloride exposure and strict documentation. The demister should be specified as a small engineered internal, not as loose mesh.

Why the offshore context changes the purchase

Limited plot space can reduce disengagement height and make local flow distribution more important. High operating pressure increases gas density, while production changes can alter gas rate, water cut, condensate loading and contaminants over the field life. At the same time, a short maintenance window and remote logistics make fit-up and documentation failures expensive.

The first review should therefore connect process duty, vessel geometry, installation route and evidence package. Selecting an alloy without checking section access, or checking velocity without reviewing inlet distribution, leaves a major part of the risk open.

Design issues

Compact separators may leave little margin for poor inlet distribution, liquid surges or installation gaps. First-pass Souders-Brown sizing should be checked with actual pressure and temperature, then reviewed against liquid load and vessel layout.

Vane packs can be attractive where liquid load or fouling is significant. Mesh pads can be suitable when fine mist capture and compact height are priorities.

Use minimum, normal, maximum continuous and credible upset cases at operating conditions. Include anticipated future production where the project expects a changed gas-liquid ratio. Confirm the inlet device, high liquid level, distance to the demister, gas outlet location and any direct flow path.

For a retrofit, inspect whether carryover is uniform or concentrated in one area. Local deformation, clean bypass lanes, edge gaps or a damaged inlet device can explain failure without changing the media family.

Access and maintainability

Record the manway’s actual clear opening, platform lifting limit, internal turning path, support-ring geometry and space for personnel to assemble sections safely. A nominal manway size is not enough. Section width and weight should suit the verified handling route, and match marks must remain readable after storage and transport.

If the replacement is intended for a planned shutdown, agree the drawing-approval and packing timeline backwards from the outage. “Delivery before shutdown” is not a complete schedule unless approval, material procurement, inspection, packing and transport milestones are also defined.

Material and QA

Marine and produced-water environments can raise chloride corrosion risk. SS316L may be acceptable in some duties, while duplex, Monel or other alloys may be considered where chemistry and project standards require them.

Separate external marine exposure during storage and installation from the internal process environment. Produced-water chlorides, H2S, CO2, oxygen ingress, treatment chemicals and deposits all affect the internal material review. Freeze mesh, grids, tie wires, hold-downs and attachment materials as one set. If the project has sour-service or offshore material requirements, cite the controlled project document and required evidence rather than asking only for “offshore grade.”

Define the QA scope in the RFQ so it is priced into the quotation and frozen in the PI: the material or batch traceability record you need, dimensional inspection against agreed measurement points and acceptance limits, section marking, pre-shipment photos, packing suitable for sea freight and clear installation orientation. Each shipment then carries those records as delivery evidence. EN 10204 Type 3.1 or Type 3.2 documentation and third-party inspection are optional upgrades — request them before material procurement, production or inspection booking so traceability, cost and schedule are confirmed upfront. Offshore replacement windows are expensive, so controlled drawings, field data and applicable shop checks should reduce fit-up risk before shipment. Without complete physical data or a site trial fit, they cannot guarantee a perfect vessel fit.

The baseline inspection should prove the agreed construction, not imply process performance. A performance-guaranteed route additionally requires the operating envelope, inlet droplet and liquid-loading basis, allowable pressure drop, acceptance criterion and responsibility for upstream conditions.

Packing and preservation

Large low-mass internals can be damaged by stacking, point loads and repeated handling. Define a rigid case or frame, internal restraint, moisture barrier where needed, lifting points, stack restriction, section inventory and visible orientation marks. Preserve material identification without placing loose supplier literature inside the final package.

RFQ information

Send vessel drawings if available, operating pressure and temperature, gas and liquid flow, chloride or H2S information, manway size, internal support details, certification requirements and delivery location.

Add minimum and maximum cases, liquid loading and slug history, gas and liquid properties, inlet-device and outlet geometry, high liquid level, available pressure drop, failure photos, support-ring survey, section weight limit, shutdown date and the project documents that actually govern materials and inspection.

Use the installation guide to verify access and the compressor suction guide where the separator protects rotating equipment.

Engineering source and limits

Sulzer’s Gas/Liquid Separation Technology presents offshore and high-pressure separators as complete systems of inlet devices, internals and drainage rather than isolated pads. It supports the review sequence used here. Capacity or efficiency for a named proprietary separator cannot be transferred to a generic replacement without matching construction and duty.

Frequently asked questions

What makes offshore demister replacement different?

Tight replacement windows, sea-freight packing, chloride exposure and strict documentation. Controlled drawings, field measurements and applicable shop checks should reduce fit-up risk before shipment; without complete physical data or a site trial fit, they cannot eliminate it.

What documents do offshore projects usually require?

Confirm the baseline QA records, marking and traceability requirements in the RFQ and PI. EN 10204 Type 3.1 or Type 3.2 documentation and third-party inspection are optional, must be planned before the applicable procurement, production or booking stage, and are separately quoted.
